Suicide Doors Concept:

Ok, so last when I came home, I hit the garage door opener and the door began to rise.  Slowly as the door rose up and the Bug became visible the Idea entered my head of how it would look sporting suicide style doors.  I have spent the time and money customizing it up to this point; why not at least investigate the possibility.

Almost immediately I called Jason to get his opinion, Jason has been around a multitude of custom cars in his past and he is a great supporter (enabler) of my crazy Ideas. This is probably one of the things he liked about my brother we both have always had the tendency to come up with some wild spur of the moment Ideas. Jason of course thought it was an excellent idea so I began investigating how it could be done.

First off I removed the driver side door and hinges looked at the mounting configuration and what would need to be done to relocate them to the rear of the door.

At first thought you would think it would be easy, not the case, it would involve using a Plasma cutter to remove the hinges, since they are factory welded into the door. Patching of the cutout would be necessary, then re-welding the hinges into the back of the door.

That is just to move the hinges on the door. You still need to relocate the Striker, Setup the hinge mounts to the car, move the lock mechanism and blah blah blah … a partridge in a pear tree.  Too much to undertake for this car, not that I don’t think it would totally be the “Bomb” but to much could go wrong and I would want that to happen with my brothers car.

As always I don’t do anything without a picture, so here is a concept picture of how it would look with Suicide Doors.

I will do this on my next VW.
