Electrical? Complements of Grobbel Racing
Have you ever had that feeling like your kid left for camp? You know that
feeling of something or someone should be around, but isn’t? I had that feeling
this morning when I opened the garage door and there was nothing but space where
my Super Beetle used to be.
Yesterday, Jason came over and we trailered it out to Grobbel Racing
Laboratories to have the electrical system designed and installed.

It
is quite an honor for me to have them work on my Super, since ordinarily they
usually do one or two race only cars a year. I only have this privilege because
my brother Lee was extremely close with the Grobbel family.
Jay
came over in the afternoon and we loaded up the Super on his car hauler, and we
were off for the 10 min ride to the shop.
When
you’re working with a vehicle that is low profile and that has fiberglass
fenders you really need to be careful how you strap it down as it is in tow. I
removed a couple bolts from the rear fiberglass fenders, so they would flex with
the motion of the trailer, and not just snap the fenders off into a thousand
pieces all over a residential road… that would be bad.

I
was still getting a little worried about the fenders as I followed behind the
trailer. I know we will need to come up with another method of strapping the bug
down once the rear of the car is lowered another 4 inches, the fenders would
snap from the tie down straps for sure.
The
trip to the shop was pleasant and uneventful. It was filled with cars passing
the Super with kids faces pressed against the glass of their cars looking in awe
at a street version of “Herbie on Steroids”, some were “Slug Buggin” each other
and others just drove past with a smile.

At
the shop, we unloaded the Super and rolled it in its space next to a
“Grobbelized” 700hp Pro Street Anglia. I asked to trade pink slips, but my
comment was ignored, and not even acknowledged.
The
Pro Street Anglia is actually smaller that my Super, weighs less and has about 6
times the horse power, another awesome creation of Grobbel Racing.

The
specs that I laid out for the Grobbel Team is that I would like to remote mount
the Optima battery in the trunk (front) of the Super. They will run the entire
main electrical, and some secondary’s also, other than that I basically told
them to “Do whatever they wanted to it” I know it will be sweet when they are
finished.
